Key Points about FSSAI License
  • All traders, restaurants, food business operators, including pharmacies or medical stores selling health supplements or nutraceutical products, are required to obtain an FSSAI license.
  • As per the FSS (Licensing & Registration) Regulations, 2011, licenses and registrations are granted to Food Business Operators (FBOs) in a 3-tier system — Basic Registration, State License, and Central License.
  • An FBO must apply for FSSAI Basic Registration using Form A, or for an FSSAI State/Central License using Form B, based on their annual turnover and scale of operations.
  • FSSAI license can be obtained or renewed for a minimum of 1 year and a maximum of 5 years at a time, as chosen by the applicant.
  • If a Food Business Operator has food business premises in two or more states, a Central License must be obtained for the Registered Office or Head Office, in addition to separate licenses or registrations for each unit/premise depending on its capacity or turnover.

FSSAI License Registration

Guidelines on FSSAI License Number
  • The FSSAI license number is a 14-digit unique number that encodes information about the manufacturer's license or registration details and the manufacturing state.
  • Every brand owner must display the FSSAI logo and license number on the label of each food package, as required under FSSAI labelling regulations.
  • For imported food products, the importer must display the FSSAI logo, license number, and the name and address of the importer on a sticker to be affixed on the product before customs clearance.

Some Points to Consider about FSSAI License Renewal

Here are some key points to remember during the FSSAI license renewal process:

  • Non renewal of the FSSAI license within the due date will result in a late renewal penalty as applicable under the FSS Act, 2006.
  • The FBO’s current food license will appear in the renewal bin on the FoSCoS portal 60 days before its expiry date. FBOs are advised to initiate the renewal process as soon as it appears.
  • FBOs must submit their renewal application at least 30 days before the expiry date. In case of a delay beyond the expiry date, a late fee of ₹100 per day is charged until the renewal is completed.
  • If changes need to be made to the renewal application, the FBO must contact the designated officer, who may provide a tracking ID or receipt number for the modification request.
  • To proceed with the FSSAI license renewal on the FoSCoS portal, the FBO must accept the compliance declaration / warning message. Failure to do so will result in the application being treated as incomplete.
